You helped make Happy happy

If you ever asked yourself why you should donate to the SPCA West, we want to give you a reason. Happy. No no, not that it will make you happy to donate (although doing a good deed always does!) Happy is a kitten that was saved by the SPCA West. Happy has one eye and he sure is happy about it!

Happy was rescued by the SPCA West this winter. He was found cold and alone. No one wanted him, he was not so happy back then.

Happy contracted an infection called Feline viral rhinotracheitis, or more simply put, rhino. Rhino is the feline equivalent of kennel cough however what many people are not aware of is that when cats get sick, boy do they ever. The saying should be changed to “sick as a cat”, not “sick as a dog.”

Rhino is an upper respiratory infection of the nose and throat in cats. Cats of all ages are susceptible, but kittens are at a higher risk and may be infected at about five weeks of age. Many of the symptoms of rhino affect a cat’s eyes including spasm of the eyelid muscle resulting in closure of the eye, eye discharge, inflammation of the conjunctiva of the eye and inflammation of the cornea causing watery painful eyes and blurred vision.

Happy got hit quite hard by the infection. He was quickly put into quarantine to avoid spreading this highly contagious infection to any other of our furry felines. We immediately began to treat him but unfortunately the infection ended up taking his right eye and he needed surgery to have it removed.

Animals are so resilient. So long as they can still run around and play and get all the cuddles they need to heal, they’ll be happy. Happy the one-eyed kitten is very happy. He’s happy he’s no longer alone in the cold, he’s happy the SPCA West picked him up and brought him somewhere safe but most of all he’s Happy you donated. Without your donations to the SPCA West medical emergency fund what would have happened to him?

On January 19th, 2019 Happy was adopted. His new family will love every little bit of him, including his one lonely eye. Happy says thank you for your support and to please continue fighting for the ones who can not fight for themselves. Donate today so we can keep all the Happys out there happy and healthy.
